Do you know what phantom power consumption is? 👻🔌⚡
👆 In this post we explain what it is and give you some tips to reduce it and save on your electricity bill⬇️💰.
Phantom consumption is the electricity an appliance uses while plugged into the mains even when it isn’t being used. Plugged-in electronic devices have a transformer that adjusts the voltage using two coils. When a device is on standby, one coil is always active.

You can see this active coil, for example, in the red light on the TV when it is switched off but still plugged in.

According to Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), devices on standby account for 7% to 11% of annual electricity costs, roughly €60 a year.

How can I avoid phantom consumption?

  • When you buy a new appliance, check the label and make sure it’s efficient. Also check its standby consumption.
  • Use timers to switch electronic devices off automatically.
  • Power strips with a switch are a great way to plug in and unplug several devices at once, quickly and easily.
  • If you’re going on holiday or will be away from home for a long time, make sure you unplug your electronic devices, such as the fridge.

Which devices in my home use the most power?

These are the devices that use a lot of power on standby, which you can unplug day to day when you’re not using them:

  • Television📺
  • Laptop 💻
  • Microwave ♨️
  • Coffee maker ☕
  • Cordless phone 📞
  • Video game consoles 🎮
We hope you found this information useful and that Voltaic’s tips help you cut your electricity use and, with it, your bill. 🌱💚
