Basic information about an EV charging point

An EV charging point is an installation connected to the grid that supplies electricity to the vehicle and is used to charge both electric and hybrid vehicles. These points can be in public areas or in private homes.

What types of charging do charging points offer?

There are different ways to charge an electric vehicle:

  • Standard charging: usually done at home. It uses 16 A and power typically ranges from 3.6 kW to 7.4 kW, depending on the charger and the home’s contracted power.
  • Fast charging: these points are usually found at businesses, supermarkets and shopping centres. They use 32 A and power from 11 kW to 22 kW.
  • Rapid charging: points located mainly along roads. Charging is always in direct current (DC), with up to 50 kW of power. A CHAdeMO or CCS Combo connector is required.
  • Ultra-rapid charging: found at service stations and EV charging stations, with output power from 150 kW.

What are the different types of EV connectors?

Depending on the car model and the type of charging, the most common are:

  • Standard plug or Schuko: the connector used in household sockets. Suitable for standard charging.
  • CCS2 Combo 2: allows AC charging at 44 kW (63 A three-phase at 400 V) and up to 100 kW in DC.
  • Type 1 or Yazaki: a connector of Japanese origin designed specifically for electric cars. It can charge at up to 32 A on single-phase low voltage, with a maximum charging power of 7.4 kW.
  • Type 2 or Mennekes: supports charging from 16 A (single-phase) up to 63 A three-phase, with AC power from 3.7 kW to 44 kW.
  • CHAdeMO: supports charging at up to 50 kW at 125 A DC.
